FFXI & Windows 7, A Quick Guide

kimi-compy

Well, after a few hours of working and a lot of tinking around. I finally have a working version of the new Windows 7 Release Candidate running on my system. So far things are running extremly well, with none of the persistant crashes that had plagued my copy of XP for the longest time. Although I hate to admit it, I think Microsoft finally got it right on this one. It’s about damned time…

As for those worrying about making the switch to Windows 7 & FFXI, relax. I’ve had no problems so far with FFXI to this point. About the only annoying part was the POL download from the website, as you will need the Vista specific version avalible there. I’ll have a full update on how things are going in-game tomorrow at some point in the evening. In the meantime, here’s a quick guide for those of you wanting to make the switch & get the game going asap.

* BACKUP YOUR S*IT FIRST! (Just in case)
* Install the Windows 7 RC from DVD, takes around an hour or so at most. If your installing from XP (as I did), you will need to reinstall your applications. Fortunatly none of your data (documents, files, ect…) should be lost.
* Once Windows 7 is running, look for a folder in your install drive named Windows.old. In it is the contents of everything you had prior to installing 7, which should include your Play Online directory and such.
* Install POL via the links provided on the site. You will need the Vista compatible version.
* Install FFXI as normal (having Vana’diel Collection 2008 is best for this)
* After installing, copy the contents of your PlayOnline folder from Windows.old to your new install. Then go into POL and do a file check. POL will show that files need to be repaired and will download these.
* Start the game as normal after the download & file check completes. Congratulations! You just saved about 4 hours worth of downloading updates if done correctly.

Going to bed now, need to be up for some important interviews tomorrow. Wish me luck!

Okay, I just installed POL and it works fine for me. But when I try to install FFXI, it won’t read the CD. I don’t know what’s wrong with it D: I’d appreciate it if you could kindly help me out, my e-mail is sarap_mag_beer@msn.com

  • charlieguide

I’m having the same problem as Jumbo. Brand new laptop, followed instructions explicitly: made sure my previous attempts to install were uninstalled/deleted, downloaded the vista/7 version of POL, ran it to get updates, then tried to run setuppol.exe from the disc. I get an error saying there’s already a previous version and it can’t install this version.

please email if you’ve got any ideas: gaidin1_75@yahoo.com

Same problem here, anyone managed to fix it?

  • Stormbringer

I have brand new lappy and am having the exact same issues. Once the online patch is downloaded the POL on the disk won’t load, won’t recognize its own code, etc. Did complete delete and reinstall to no avail.

  • Cody

I installed FFXI and the Playonline from the website… Playonline works but when I try to play FFXI, it says Its not installed… clueless here!!!
