The Language in WoW (Explained in FFXI Language)

Since FFXI is pretty Multicultural, we tend to use the {Translator} in our communication a lot simply because it can reach out to much more people (Well, it used to be cool when you can talk/understand/interact with Japanese, now we just use it as a habit or lazy to type). But ever wonder what it is like in a real pure-NA server? eg. in WoW?

Lets give you an idea!

Say you wanna sell a Scorpion Harness..

FFXI:
{Scorpion Harness}{Do you need it?} 1m {please}{/tell}{Thank You}

WoW:
WTS [Scorpion Harness] PST!

You’re probably like… WTF? First of all, all item in WoW can be linked. When you “hover” over the [Scorpion Harness] link with your mouse, it will display the thing to the left. Pretty much clarifies right away WTF people are selling. There are so much item in WoW, that its nearly impossible for anyone to fully remember the use of each item. In FFXI, at least we know its for Melees even if we don’t know the exact stats on it.

WoW is n00b friendly!

So WTF does that sentence mean then?

WTS = Wanting to Sell
PST = Please Send Tell!

So in complete sentences:
{Wanting to Sell}[Scorpion Harness]{Please Send Tell}!

Btw: did you know YOYD = Your Orb Your Drop? lol xD

Pretty interesting huh! There’s many more acronym in WoW too, lets go over some common ones!

Common Language

WC = Wailing Cavern, an Instance name. Most instances (Exp Camp.. kinda) have abbreviation. Just like FFXI, we describe “Al-Taieu” as “Sea”, Caedarva Mire Exp camp as “The Mire”, same goes for Colibri.
WTB = Wanting to Buy
WTS = Wanting to Sell (FFXI can be World Transfer Service)
LFW = Looking for Work (Yes, that’s one method of making money, shouting for work)
LF(n)M [Job] PST! = Looking for (n=one, two three) more, [Job = WHM, BLM etc…] Please send tell! (That’s how people fill in missing spots in WoW!)
LFG = Looking for Group (same for both MMO)
LFM = Looking for More!
POS = Piece of Shit
G = Gold. Remember, WoW uses Gold, not Gil :)
KTM = KLH’s Threat Meter, a famous addon that measures your enmity and displays them, so you know exactly if you’re taking hate soon. Its the most famous addon, kind of like Windower for FFXI.

Item Related

BoP = Bind on Pickup (Equilvalent to Rare/Ex in FFXI)
BoE = Bind on Equipment, meaning the item is Non-Rare/Ex atm, but as soon as you equip it, it becomes Rare/Ex

Battle Related

DPS = Damage per second. Its equilvalent to the term “DD” in FFXi.
CD = Cooldown! (In FFXI, we say “Use 2hr”, in WoW we say “Burn your Cooldown!”
CC = Crowd Control (The abilty to disable a mob from any interaction, Eg. Lullaby, Sleep)
Spec = Your specific Talent. Eg. Para/Slow II Merited, or Solo Spec (Bio 3, Phanalx 2 Merited) etc.
LoS = Lost of Sight, a strategy that PvPer use to avoid damage by running “out of sight” of the enemy. We just say “Los”, like “lost” without the T lol.. pretty confusing at start.
Pat = Patrol. There are mobs that just walk around dungeons (dynamis), seeking for prey. If they see you… they will most like link all other carp with them :D So its important to kill Pat whenever possible :) to avoid troubles.

Now comes the harder ones:

L2P = Learn to Play
L2R = Learn to Read

The PUGS / “Pickup Parties”

Pugs = Pickup Parties, a random party formed from random people through the LFP system (for both games)

In WoW, the term for it is kinda bad.. the definition for PUGS is

PUG: (noun) A group of people who probably aren’t finishing an instance today. (Eg. in FFXI language, A group of people who won’t even get a merit today)

Now if you’re really into Acronym.

  • Final Fantasy Slangs can be found here. Some of the terms is even unheard of… I don’t even know how it made it there.
  • World of Warcraft Acronym / Slangs here. These are actually term which I’ve heard of.. except a few like OOM (Out of Mana.. wtf?) lol

Little bit about Pugs/Pickup Parties.

In FFXI, people tend to look down on “Pickup Parties” or “Pickup Groups”. Its a general conception that these are “bad” or “not-experienced” players. From most of my experience, yes I do agree up to a certain point, at least my experience that they tend to be pretty horrible, at least in comparison to my own ducks. Yes, us established and old school player tend not to do “Pickups” simply because we’ve already done it, or have a linkshell which is willing to help others out. The LFG shouts in Whitegate is therefore, tend to fill with people that don’t have a friend that can give you a hand or is not associated with a helpful linkshell, and also they don’t have the experience and organizational skills like we do.

But you also cannot deny the fact that… there are very skilled players out there that don’t have a linkshell. My friend Tsunade is a good example, where he doesn’t really have the time to be in a linkshell, but is pretty damn skilled. Not everyone can be a good player, but a good player can be found anywhere. Good player doesn’t only mean you know your job well, but also the ability to communicate, the generosity with treasure and loot, the patience required to make things work, and also just being a constructive adventurer to the whole community.

Also, there are people who just help others for enjoyment. Bubian is one example who would just randomly help others in shouts with whatever they want, and I personally, benefit from them before. I’ve also seen people like this in WoW.

Its more or less the same in WoW. People tend to look down on PUGS but hay, I was pretty much pickup by my current guild from being part of the PUGS too! IMO honestly, PUGS train you up since you will be dealing with people you don’t know at all, horrible in-experienced players that rely on you to make a change… and its probably how we get better. We strive to be the better one out of the group :)

That’s it for the WoW difference post for this week :) & I typed all that with the BlackBerry :D

    When I went from FFXI to WoW, I was so confused. It was like

    Random: LFG BRD 4/5 CC plz

    I thought ‘what the hell? Looking for a Bard? WoW doesn’t have Bards.. And 4/5? No sixth? WTF is CC!’ xD.

    I remember needing to look up a guide as to what the lingo was on WoW. Some of it I made out on my own, but others really threw me for a loop! It almost made me miss alt-tabbing, but in FFXI I miss linking equipment on that chat logs. :x Wish we could have both…
